Nominations for candidates in the bye-election race for President of the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU/AMLCT) have opened at noon today, according to a statement released by the Election Commission (EC) the governing body over Students’ Union elections.
The announcement comes after the resignation of former President Seán Thim on Friday, October 31st, which has left the office vacant. Education Officer Buster Whaley has been fulfilling Presidential responsibilities in the meantime.
The EC emphasised in their statement that “due to the important nature of the office of President, the Electoral Commission aims to fill this position as quickly as possible.”
Nominations will remain open throughout the week, and will close on November 10th at noon. On that same day, names of candidates will be announced on the steps of Teach 6 at 1pm, with a mandatory campaign meeting for candidates and their campaign managers scheduled directly after at 1:30.
Campaigning will begin on Monday, November 17th at 10am, and will conclude on November 21st at 5pm. The election period will begin during campaigning on Wednesday, November 19th, at 10am, continuing until the end of the campaign period the 21st at 4pm.
If students are interested in running for the role, they must have ten nominations backing their candidacy from other students, according to article 7.3.5 of the TCDSU Constitution. Students may nominate themselves.
