In a statement today, Trinity’s Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the rescheduling of the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU/AMLCT) President Bye-Election to begin November 23rd as opposed to the previously planned date of November 17th. The election was moved to accommodate a referendum vote on TCDSU declaring “no confidence” in the current Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael government. Voting for the referendum and the TCDSU President bye-election will now occur at the same time.
“In order to relieve pressure on TCDSU/AMLCT Electoral Commission and minimise the cost of running such elections in the Union, the Presidential Bye-Election shall be moved so that voting occurs at the same time as the referendum,” said the EC in their statement.
The EC emphasised that all other dates having to do with the Presidential election will remain the same. Bye-election nominations will Monday, November 10th at noon. Campaign manager forms for both sides of the referendum will also remain open until Wednesday, November 12th at noon. Pre-campaigning will end in turn on November 17th, with campaigning set to start on the 23rd. Voting for both the bye-election and the referendum will begin on Wednesday the 26th at 10am and end at 4pm on Friday the 28th. Results will be announced the evening of the 28th, with location and specific times to be determined.
So far, no candidates have been confirmed in the Presidential Race. Those who are interested in applying for the campaign manager position for the referendum should fill out this form before November 12th.
