Today, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Fianna Fáil Councillor Daryl Barron, visited Trinity to launch National Services Day, which will be on September 5th. Barron was joined by four emergency vehicles, about 30 National Service members, and a few dogs. The day represents members of An Garda Síochana, Civil Defence, and the Irish Red Cross, among 21 others.
Barron gave a speech to the assembled service members, noting that the day was about “more than Dublin” and thanked the service workers for putting in additional hours while Ireland holds the EU presidency.
A group of tourists gathered to watch the display and were thanked by Barron, though he turned to speak directly to the representative service workers.
The National Services Day website reads, “Every day, the frontline, emergency and security personnel of Ireland work tirelessly to keep the citizens of the State safe – often in challenging circumstances. Despite this, the average person rarely gets to meet the people doing this work outside the working environment and the frontline, emergency and security services rarely are provided with the opportunity to thank the public for their support and assistance.”
It continues, “At some point in their life every Irish person has been helped by frontline, emergency and security service staff. The National Services Day has created a much-needed focal point for the frontline, emergency and security services to acknowledge their appreciation to the public.”
