From DU Music, to Cumann Gaelach, to Disability Awareness Week, once again we are spoiled for choice with society fun this week. With essay season well and truly taking over our lives, it’s getting increasingly difficult to take note of all of the great society events taking place across campus. Hopefully these suggestions will entice you away from the books to enjoy all that Trinity’s societies have on offer, maybe even enjoying a few cheeky chiacchieratas (“chats” for all you non-Italian speakers).
Monday
Head over to the Global Room at 2pm to enjoy the sweet melodies of Ryan O’Shaughnessy with DU Music Society. The singer-songwriter and producer has enjoyed great success Europe wide since representing Ireland at the Eurovision this year, thanks to his song “Together”. O’Shaughnessy has also released a new song since, entitled “Civil War”. Those who manage to secure a seat will get access to an intimate performance and an engaging interview with the musician.
Tuesday
Samhain, which won Best Collaborative Event last year, is back, once again hosted by the Cumann Gaelach and Trinity’s Traditional Music Society (Trad Soc). The festival will take place all day Tuesday and into the night. There will be free workshops throughout the day (including one in leaf crown-making and even a sean-nós singing workshop), followed by an evening of performances, a reception, and a night in The Wiley Fox afterwards. (All free except for entrance to The Wiley Fox, which is €5). Samhain, which is set to bring us on a cultural, spiritual and artistic journey, is inspired by the Pagan festival of Samhain. Wednesday
Join DU Food and Drink Society in the Eliz Room, House 6, to indulge your sushi-loving taste buds. The group will go through the intricacies of those oh-so-tasty California rolls, and more, and will have you a master of the trade come 7pm. All food and materials will be provided free of charge: honestly, what more could you want? Due to the popularity of the society’s cooking events, this will be a ticketed event. Sign up is in the Arts Block on Monday from 11am-12pm.
Thursday
The Society for International Affairs (SOFIA) is hosting a Model UN committee simulation of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council to debate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The event will be taking place in the Eliz Room, House 6 from 4pm and will engage with the tragic reality facing so many Yemen civilians today. With over 18 million civilians killed, displaced or at risk of starvation because of the civil war, the crisis is undoubtedly a pressing issue in international affairs that calls for such informative events as this, so be sure to get a seat.
Friday
Trinity Italian Society is convening once again for its weekly “Caffe and a Chiacchierta” event. Held in the Eliz Room in House Six at 1pm, the group get together to chat in Italian, about all things Italian, over some scrumptious Italian food. Enjoy free croissants (known in Italy as cornetti or brioches) and free coffee, and all the conversational delights of the land of pizza and pasta. This event is for members but anyone is welcome to join on the day for just €2.
