Despite the best efforts of the ‘Stop the Game’ campaign that took place outside of Aviva Stadium in Dublin just a few days ago, the Republic of Ireland v Israel UEFA Nations League match went on as scheduled today in Bačka Topola, Serbia.
The Republic of Ireland team asserted their dominance early on in the match, maintaining majority possession of the ball, and taking several shots within the opposition’s box. The team’s efforts were soon rewarded with a penalty in the 39th minute, which Troy Parrott safely tucked away to secure a 1-0 lead over Israel.
By half time, the Israeli team seemed virtually overpowered, with the Irish defense affording them zero shots on target, and hardly any play in the penalty box.
While initially dominating the first half and earning a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, the second half saw a significant drop in concentration from the Irish team, resulting in an equaliser in the 47th minute of the match. Despite efforts to regain their composure, Ireland was unable to generate adequate attacking potential in the latter half of the match.
This marked an important fixture for the Irish squad, as a victory would place them in direct contention for promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League. After a disappointing draw, however, Ireland is left two points behind the current group leaders, Austria. The fate of the Irish team ultimately depends on their performance against the Austrian team on the 14th of November, for what should make an exciting fixture in the competition.
